With nearly 20 years of HR experience, John Whelan joined Indiana University as associate vice president for human resources in June 2014. In this position, Whelan directs the overall management of human resources at IU.
Whelan came to Indiana University after spending five years at Baylor University where he was the vice president for human resources and chief HR officer. Prior to working at Baylor, Whelan served in HR leadership at the University of Notre Dame and was a concurrent faculty member in Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business. Whelan’s HR career includes multiple HR management positions at Bristol-Myers Squibb, The Gillette Company, and Brown Brothers Harriman & Co.
Before entering the human resources field, he worked for several service organizations such as the South Bend Center for the Homeless, the Notre Dame Legal Aid Clinic, and the Madison Mental Health Center.
Whelan earned a B.A. and J.D. from Notre Dame. He serves on the national board of directors of the College and University Professional Association for HR (CUPA-HR ). He is admitted to practice law by the Bar of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Bar of the United States District Court of Massachusetts.
